在古籍资料中多有关于宣德五彩的记载，从目前的资料中查阅，最先记载宣德五彩的是明万历年间（1591年），瑞南道人高濂著书《遵生八笺》中的相关论述，明万历朝（1597年），地理学家王世性著书《广志绎》卷四中有如下记载——“宣德五彩，堆垛深厚，而成窑用浅淡”；高濂则在《燕闲清赏笺》中有言：“宣德年造如漏空花纹，填以五色，华若云锦，有五彩实填，绚丽悦目”。可见，早在明人笔记中即已较多地记载了宣德五彩瓷器。
宣德时期生产的瓷器，不但制作精巧，而且品种繁多，釉上彩，釉下彩，单色与杂色釉均有烧制。特别是青花五彩，洒兰釉品种的创新给宣德瓷又增添了不少迷人的传说。与此同时宣德瓷民窑瓷业也发展很快，器型丰富，品种繁多，敦厚凝重，官窑制作精细，民窑产品粗放，给后人至今留下了一批令人追捧和喜爱的艺术瑰宝。
宣德五彩有着极其重要的作用，可以说它对于彩瓷的发展，对于中国瓷器历史来说是承上启下的。宣德五彩受到元代红绿彩的影响，在宣德成熟红彩的基础上开拓性的首创了五彩此新品种，使中国瓷器跃上了更美的境界。
