明代铸造金铜佛极为兴盛。从明太祖朱元璋始，他的儿子朱棣在成为永乐皇帝后，为巩固中央政权，致力与当时西藏宗教的密切交好，大力度推崇佛教。并且在皇宫中专门设立了宫廷造办处，专造御用佛像。
